Hand-Hammered Brass Boot
c. 1850–1890
This hand-hammered brass boot dates to the late 19th century and was originally used near coal-burning hearths to protect floors, clothing, and doorways from heat and embers. Its form was made for function long before décor.
Visible hammer marks, subtle asymmetry, riveted seams, and hand-formed eyelets confirm pre-industrial manufacture, distinguishing it from later machine-pressed examples. The brass has developed a deep, even patina consistent with age and prolonged exposure to heat and handling.
Today, the piece reads as both sculptural and historical. Well suited for modern interiors as a standalone object, umbrella or cane rest, or functional artifact.
